Painting Instructions

Example of L value scale (LRV)
Example LRV (Light Reflective Value) Scale

ENVIROGUARD cellular PVC windows and millwork should be painted with standard oil base or latex paint using industry standard painting techniques after cleaning.

ENVIROGUARD product extrusions are cellular PVC, a vinyl-based composite. As such, they may be subject to thermal expansion and contraction at direct temperatures above 145 F degrees. Extreme dark colors may accelerate this situation, as dark colors tend to absorb a greater amount of solar heat, which can cause cellular PVC to expand and contract excessively and warping/distortion can occur. Distortion of frame and sash components, paint adhesion loss, blistering and peeling could also result. Painting ENVIROGUARD products a dark color (colors with an LRV value of 56 or darker (black = 0 and white = 100) can generate high localized temperatures in the product. “L Value” is a measure of lightness.  LRV values are available for all color ranges.  The sample graphic is representative and does not show all colors.  Check with your paint manufacturer for the LRV value.

WARNING: Painting any ENVIROGUARD cellular PVC product with a paint color darker than an LRV value of 56 (where black = 0 and white = 100) will forfeit the product warranty. If, despite the above warning, you should choose to paint ENVIROGUARD products a dark color (as defined above), a paint specifically designed for these applications MUST be used. Whichever paint manufacturer is chosen must be contacted to verify the paint’s reflective properties and suitability with regard to painting cellular PVC. Precision Millworks Inc is not liable for paint used on our cellular PVC components or the result of its use.

Detailed Finishing Instructions

  • All joints and nail holes should be caulked with quality paintable caulk.
  • Darker colors with a value of L-56 or below should be avoided.
  • Two full coats of quality oil or water-based paint should be used.
  • Do not paint weather-strip.
  • 1/16” to 1/8” paint overlap must be left from sash to glass to avoid water infiltration.

Beginning April 22, 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. EPA requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities and schools be certified by EPA and that they use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers to follow lead-safe work practices. For more information please visit http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovation.htm.

CLEANING PROCESS AFTER INSTALLATION

Remove protective tape on completion of installation and prior to final cleaning. Using a soft wet brush or cloth, remove all debris from coated surface. Never wipe with a dry brush or cloth, as the cement or sand deposits will abrade the coating. Any dry cement should be removed immediately with a soft brush, as it will attack the surface coating when it becomes wet. Wash surface using a mild detergent with a soft sponge, chamois or similar (soft absorbent cloth), rinse and dry. Never use solvent base cleaners or PVC-U cleaners.

AFTERCARE

Our coating has been made with the finest raw materials to provide many years of trouble-free covering. However, as with all coatings, good maintenance is necessary to achieve this. Contaminates such as bird droppings or sand from a coastal environment should be removed immediately. When removing these items never use a dry cloth. Always use warm water containing a mild detergent and a soft absorbent cloth but not until loose particles etc. have been removed from the surface using a soft wet brush. The surface should be cleaned as described above using a mild detergent and a soft sponge or cloth, rinsed and dried.
